The site of old Miletus. Photo Jona Lendering. Old Miletus was the town of people like Thales, who invented philosophy, and the geographer Hecataeus. It was sacked by the Persians in 494 BCE, after they had destroyed the navy of the Ionian Greeks at Lade. The city was rebuilt on another site; this picture shows the site of the old town.
