Megiste

Unless otherwise indicated, pictures on this page © Marco Prins and Jona Lendering. Photos can be downloaded and used for non-commercial purposes, but you have to acknowledge Livius.
The island of Megiste, the most easterly part of Greece. Photo Jona Lendering. The island of Megiste, the most easterly part of Greece, opposite the coast of Turkey. In Antqiruity, sailors arriving from the east knew they were close to Greece when they saw this island, which is rather inappropriately called Megiste, "the largest". Today, it is called Kastelorizo.

Although Megiste belongs to the periphery of the classical Greek world, it was open to Greek civilization. This picture shows the hero Bellerophon and his winged horse Pegasus; it is part of a sarcophagus found on Megiste, and now in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
