Photos from Holland

An olive tree near Agrigento. Photo Jona Lendering. Don't expect too much of the ancient remains from Holland, or Germania Inferior. The country lacks natural stone, so monumental architecture was virtually absent. Besides, especially in the west of this country, Roman remains are covered by river clay that has been deposited in the course of twenty centuries.

Consequently, photographs of Holland in the Roman age are usually made by archaeologists during an excavation. Several of them can be found on another part of the Livius website, which can be reached here. These pictures were found on the internet and are believed to be in the public domain. Unless otherwise indicated, pictures on this page © Marco Prins and Jona Lendering. Photos can be downloaded and used for non-commercial purposes, but you have to acknowledge Livius. If available, large, high resolution pictures are available on request. High resolution pictures are available on request.
