Four Seasons Mosaic
Round Mosaic
One of these mosaics shows the four seasons. To the left, we can see this representation of the spring. The same theme is also depicted in the Villa Selene.
Running counterclockwise, we meet Summer at the bottom of the mosaic...
... Autumn to the right, ...
and on top, we meet Winter.
To the left and right of these four ladies, we see land animals and birds...
... a sacrificial animal and more birds.
Fish...
... and more fish, ...
... fishermen with waterbirds, ...
and hunters and birds. Landscapes like these are called "Nilotic scenes" because they were believed to represent life on the banks of the Nile. They are very common and remained popular until the end of Antiquity (cf. the mosaics in the Villa Selene, in the Villa with the Mosaics of the Nile and at Theodorias).
