Assos and Lesbos (background). Assos was founded by Greeks from Methymna on Lesbos in the tenth or ninth century BCE. In the sixth century, it became part of the Lydian and Persian empires, but it kept its Greek character. A friend of Aristotle of Stagira, Hermias, ruled the town and invited the philosopher to stay at Assos. He wrote his biological works over here. | |
