West of Miletus was a small island called Lade. On two occasions, it was of vital military importance. In 494, the Persians defeated the Ionian Greeks off Lade; and in 334, the Macedonian king Alexander the Great defeated the Persians on the same spot. Today, the island no longer exists because the deposits of the river Meander have connected it to the mainland. This picture shows the former island, as it can be seen from Miletus. |
