The Late Roman bridge at Tarsus. Photo Jona Lendering. Tarsus was the old capital of Cilicia, commanding the road from the Mediterranean to Central Anatolia through the Cilician Gate. In 66, it became the capital of the Roman province and later, all inhabitants received the Roman citizenship (the most famous representative is the apostle Paul). Later, it was eclipsed by nearby Adana. Nevertheless, the town remained important. This picture shows a late Roman bridge at Tarsus.
Second-century gate of Sardes. Photo Jona Lendering. The Roman gate of Tarsus. According to tradition, this is the place where Cleopatra VII Philopator of Egypt met Marc Antony. However, the gate was constructed in the second century CE. This is a satellite photo.
