Apollonia:
city in the Cyrenaica,
port of Cyrene.
Apollonia was founded as the port of Cyrene, which means that it was not the main site that, in case of an emergency, had to be defended. The walls of Apollonia, therefore, do not date back to the oldest stage of occupation, but were built in the Hellenistic Age. They are very well preserved, especially in the southeast, although it is not always easy to see the gates. |
