Stone Tablets in Amsterdam |

![]() |
This
is the third page on
Amsterdam gevelstenen ('stone tablets
from a façade; is a poor translation); the first one can be
found here. The first photo, to the left, shows a Batavian warrior named Claudius Civilis. He is none other than Julius Civilis, the hero of the Batavian Revolt. For reasons unknown to me, he has been called "Claudius" since the Renaissance, which is wrong. Yet, in the Dutch tradition, the name has become common. |
