Germania
inferior: small province
of the Roman empire, situated along the Lower Rhine.
This webpage is part of a series of short descriptions of villages in Germania
inferior. An overview can be found here.
The fort at Albaniana controlled the confluence of the small river Aar and the frontier river Rhine. A part of the wall and a gate were excavated in 2002-2003. A dendrochronological dating of the wood enables us to say that the fort was built after thestate visit of Caligula to Germania Inferior. This conclusion becomes almost inevitable when we take into account that about a quarter of the coins found at Alphen aan den Rijn dates back to the reign of this emperor, which lasted less than four years. Near the site of the old fort is a modern open-air museum (Archeon), where ancient and medieval buildings are reconstructed. In 2007, a start was made with reconstructing the excavated gate, which will be finished in 2008. |
