Gla

Gla. Photo Jona Lendering. Gla: Mycenaean fortress in Boeotia.

The immense Mycenaean fortress of Gla, which can not be identified with a known ancient town, was situated on an island in the Copaic Lake in Boeotia. Today, the lake has been drained and the city is more accessible. The walls are 2¾ km long, which makes Gla a very big city, larger than, for example, Mycene or Tiryns.

This is one of the gates (Dutchman added for scale). Inside the fortress, the remains of a palace (on top of the 72 meter high hill) and a market place with long work- and store-rooms have been identified.
