Details

The deceased was called Aurelius Surus and had been trumpeter of the First legion Adiutrix, somewhere in the late second century. He had served eighteen years, and the monument was erected by his heir and fellow-trumpeter Septimius Vibianus. Surus may have been killed in action during the siege of Byzantium in 194-195.
