Sabbath

Sabbath: the seventh and last day of the Jewish week, a day for rest.

According to the book of Genesis, God had finished the creation he had been making and rested from all his work on the seventh day.note Because of this, the Jews rested as well on the seventh day of the week. Pagans found this unsual and had odd ideas about it. For example, the emperor Augustus believed the Jews did not eat on the sabbath.note
