Legio VI Herculia

Legio VI Herculia: one of the legions of the later Roman empire. Its name means "the legion dedicated to Hercules".

This legion was created by the emperor Diocletian (284-305). It was called after his colleague, the emperor Maximianus, who often called himself Herculius, "the one like Hercules". The date of the creation of this legion is not known, but was probably at the beginning of the joint reign of the two emperors.

Together with IIII Flavia Felix (in Singidunum) and V Iovia, VI Herculia protected the important city Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica). Several rooftiles attest to its presence at Teutoburgium (near modern Vukovar). Together, V Iovia and VI Herculia were the garrison of the newly created province of Pannonia Secunda.
