- Because Yazılıkaya is close to the Hittite capital Hattusa, it may have been an important state sanctuary. It consists of two galleries of rock reliefs.
- The "large gallery" (the northern one, "chamber A") was probably made during the reign of Hattusili III (r.c.1265-c.1240). No less than sixty-three Hittite deities are represented in the rock reliefs.
- The "small gallery" (the southern one, "chamber B") was added during the reign of Tudhaliya IV (r.c.1240-c.1215). This may have been a mortuary temple, used for the royal cult.
