Mainz, Kaestrich Gate

Mogontiacum: Roman city, capital of Germania Superior, important military base, modern Mainz.

The northeastern gate today

After the Batavian Revolt in 70 CE, in which the civil settlement of Mainz had been destroyed and the castra had only with difficulty withstood a siege, soldiers of I Adiutrix and XIV Gemina rebuilt the fortress on the hill now known as Kaestrich. A part of the northeastern wall survives and a gate can still be recognized. To the southwest, the soldiers lived; to the northeast, the citizens.

The fortress itself is best known because it is the place where the Mainz Pedestals have been found.
